Sunday, August 18: The U.S. and Venezuela – A Closer Look
PASMC is not in the habit of holding events in August, but we have an opportunity to host attorney and author Dan Kovalik, who is passing through the area with his new book, “The Plot to Overthrow Venezuela – How the U.S. Is Orchestrating a Coup for Oil”. On Sunday, August 18, Kovalik will be our guest speaker, in a proper followup to our March screening of “The Revolution Will Not be Televised”, the 2006 film documenting the failed coup attempt against then-President of Venezuela, Hugo Chavez.
Kovalik calls his book “an in-depth look at the U.S. threat to ‘save’ Venezuela.” His thesis continues:
“Since 1999 when Hugo Chavez became the elected president…the U.S. has been conniving to overthrow his government and to roll back the Bolivarian Revolution which he ushered in to Venezuela. With the untimely death of Chavez in 2012, and the election of Nicolas Maduro that followed, the U.S. redoubled its efforts to overturn this revolution. The U.S. is now threatening to intervene militarily to bring about the regime change it has wanted for 20 years.
“While we have been told that the U.S.’s efforts to overthrow Chavez and Maduro are motivated by altruistic goals of advancing the interests of democracy and human rights in Venezuela, is this true? The Plot to Overthrow Venezuela answers this question with a resounding ‘no…’”.
Kovalik will speak about what Venezuela’s oil reserves mean to the U.S., how our country has supported repressive governments that preceded Chavez and Maduro, and the oligarchy in whose hands the U.S. hopes to return Venezuela and its population. Kovalik will discuss what he calls “a one-sided economic war against Venezuela”, and the effects on its economy and people.
The August 18 event begins at 7 PM at the Unitarian Universalists of San Mateo, 300 E. Santa Inez Avenue in San Mateo. Admission is free, contributions will be welcome. The UUSM is wheelchair accessible.
Dan Kovalik currently teaches International Human Rights at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He served for over 25 years as Associate General Counsel of the United Steelworkers, AFL-CIO (USW). He has also worked on Alien Tort Claims Act cases against The Coca-Cola Company and Occidental Petroleum – cases arising out of egregious human rights abuses in Colombia.
Kovalik’s other books include “The Plot to Scapegoat Russia” and “The Plot to Attack Iran”. He has also written extensively for the Huffington Post and Counterpunch, and has lectured throughout the world. Copies of “The Plot to Overthrow Venezuela” will be available for sale.
We hope to see you August 18 for this chance to get another perspective on Venezuela!
